When someone asks an AI assistant which providers to consider in your category, the assistant names a few and cites its sources. If you are not among them, you were not in the consideration set — and no ranking position fixes that, because the results page was never displayed.
Answer engine optimization is the work of being the source an AI system reaches for. It overlaps with SEO and is not the same discipline.
How answer engines choose sources
An answer engine performs retrieval, then synthesis. It gathers candidate sources, evaluates them, and writes an answer citing the ones it used. Being selected depends on four properties.
Extractability. Can the specific claim be lifted cleanly? A direct sentence answering a direct question is extractable. The same information spread across three paragraphs of narrative is not.
Specificity. Concrete, checkable statements get cited. "We offer competitive rates" is unusable. "Interchange plus 0.3% with no monthly minimum" is a citable fact.
Structural clarity. Headings that state questions, definitions near the top, structured data that labels what things are. The machine is parsing, not appreciating.
Corroboration. Claims that appear consistently across independent sources are safer to cite. A claim existing only on your own site carries less weight than one echoed elsewhere.
What to actually do
Answer the question in the first two sentences. Then elaborate. The inverted pyramid, which journalism settled on a century ago, turns out to be the correct format for machine extraction.
Write real FAQ content and mark it up. Not a marketing FAQ with three softball questions — the actual questions buyers ask, answered directly, with FAQPage structured data. This is the highest-yield AEO work available and most companies do it badly or not at all.
Publish specifics you are willing to stand behind. Prices, timelines, capacities, constraints, what you do not do. Vagueness is the primary reason a source is passed over.
Define your entity clearly and identically everywhere. Who you are, what category you are in, what you do, in consistent language across your site, your profiles, and anywhere else you appear. Inconsistency makes you harder to identify and therefore riskier to cite.
Implement organization and service schema. Structured data is the difference between a machine inferring what you are and being told.
Do not block AI crawlers. Obvious, frequently violated. Check your robots.txt for blanket disallows that catch the crawlers behind answer engines.
How to measure it
Traditional rank tracking does not measure this. You measure AEO by asking the answer engines directly: run your category's real questions through them on a schedule and record whether you appear, how you are described, and who is cited instead.
That last part is the useful signal. The sources cited in your place are your actual competitors for this surface, and they are frequently not the companies you consider competitors at all.
The relationship to SEO
AEO does not replace SEO, and the work is largely complementary — well-structured, specific, technically sound content serves both. The difference is emphasis: SEO rewards depth and authority, AEO rewards clarity and extractability. A page can rank well and be nearly useless to an answer engine, which is the situation most companies are currently in without knowing it.
